Our upcoming Press Conference on 7th May
This morning, I’m unhappy to announce that the campaign for hashtag#MartynsLaw is moving to a new phase of protest at the delays being experienced in bring in the legislation.
On 7 May 2024, Figen Murray OBE will hold a press conference on the spot where hashtag#MartynHett and 21 others were murdered, before setting off and walking to 10 Downing Street . She will arrive there on the 22nd of May, 7 years to the day since that dreadful event.
While hashtag#MartynsLaw had been a personal campaign, we shouldn’t lose sight that it was also a recommendation from the governments own inquiry into what went wrong at the Arena. It was also a promise from The Conservative Party leadership candidates in 2019. It was a promise in the election manifesto. It was in the Queen’s Speech in 2022 and the Kings Speech in 2023.
Rishi Sunak personally promised the legislation would be brought forward during a phone call to Figen Murray OBE on 13 December 2022. So where is it?
Currently, the amount of business going through Parliament is at a historic low, there is capacity therefore for hashtag#MartynsLaw to be debated. What there isn’t, is plenty of time before parliament goes into summer recess and then almost certainly goes from there into an election footing.
On the lead up to an election, the public need to know that this government is serious about keeping them safe. We live incredibly dangerous times and there can be no better motivation for getting this bill passed. What it shouldn’t take is a grieving mother to have to walk 200 miles.
Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly these delays are happening on your watch. Don’t let us down!
